5-(Octadecyloxy)isophthalic acid is a synthetic amphiphilic molecule that consists of an apolar and hydrophobic tail and a polar head. The orientation of the molecule and the interactions between the head and tail allow for the formation of lamellar structures in aqueous solution.
This molecule is able to undergo chemical reactions that are not possible with other molecules due to its oriented molecular system. It has been shown to form overlayers on terephthalic acid when it is dissolved in water, which has been observed using microscopy. 5-(Octadecyloxy)isophthalic acid's nature makes it useful for applications such as cosmetic emulsions, drug delivery systems, and oil recovery.
